How to Get Cited in AI Answers

Citations are linked sources. Mentions are just the name. Learn how to earn both with listicles, chunking, and the pages models already cite.

An AI citation is a source link inside a generated answer. ChatGPT's Sources chip, Perplexity's footnotes, Gemini's links, Copilot's references, Google AI Overview citation cards.

A mention is only your name in the prose. Mentions put you on the shortlist. Citations show the user where the claim came from, and they are the only ones that can send a click.

This guide is the how-to for citations. For the definition of AI search visibility, see AI search visibility. For what a citation is in isolation, see AI citations. Here we stay on how to earn the link.

What's the best AI SEO tracker for a startup?

Most answers name Semrush. You aren't cited.

Citations vs mentions (do not mix the scoreboard)

AnalyticsUsually nothingReferral session if they click
Typical missYou are not in the shortlistReddit, G2, or a publisher got the link

HubSpot's AEO piece uses the same split. You can be mentioned and not cited. You can be cited and not recommended. Commercial prompts should aim for both.

Track them as two columns. If mention rate rises and citation rate stays flat, the model knows your name from third parties and is not using your pages. If citation rate rises and mentions stay flat, your URL is fuel for someone else's recommendation.

What cited pages have in common

Models do not "read the article" the way a subscriber does. They retrieve a candidate set, then lift a passage that answers a sub-question.

Cited pages tend to share a few traits:

  • A self-contained answer near the heading. Two to four sentences that still make sense if you paste them into a chat with no intro.
  • A heading that matches how people ask. "How do I track Google AI Overviews?" beats "A new era of measurement."
  • Checkable facts. Numbers, dates, limits, named methods. The Princeton GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., 2023) found citations, quotations, and statistics helped inclusion. Keyword stuffing hurt it.
  • A page that is eligible to be fetched. Crawlable HTML (or Markdown on Accept: text/markdown), allowed bots, indexed where the engine retrieves from.
  • Corroboration elsewhere. The same claim shows up on a listicle, a docs page, or a review, so the model is not relying on a single self-description.

You do not need a special llms.txt to get cited. You need a passage the model can lift without lying.

Chunk the page so a model can steal one block

"Chunking" here is not a vendor ritual. It means each section is a quotable unit.

Write it like this:

  1. H2 = the question the prompt will ask (or the rewritten query behind it).
  2. Answer capsule in the first two sentences. Include the entity names you want repeated.
  3. Evidence. A table, a numbered procedure, a dated figure, or a quoted primary source.
  4. Caveat in one line if the answer depends on plan, region, or date. Models drop pages that oversell.

Keep sections short enough to extract. Two hundred to four hundred words per H2 is a practical range. Dumping 2,000 words under one heading buries the capsule.

Use lists and tables when the prompt wants a comparison. Ahrefs' Q1 2026 benchmark found blog-style lists made up 43.8% of ChatGPT source URLs for top-of-funnel "best" queries. That is not a reason to publish junk roundups. It is a reason to put comparable attributes in a grid a model can lift: price, limit, best for, not for.

FAQ blocks help for follow-up questions. Mark them up with FAQPage schema if the FAQs are visible on the page. Schema is a label, not a citation switch.

Same URL, less noise: if you already serve Markdown to agents, do it (Markdown for agents). It does not create authority. It makes the chunk cheaper to parse.

Get onto the sources models already cite

The fastest citation is often not your blog. It is a page the engine already trusts that now includes you.

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google for your top prompts. Write down every domain in Sources / footnotes / AI Overview cards. That list is the real ranking factor for citations in your category.

You will usually see some mix of:

  • Independent "best X" listicles and roundups
  • Review directories (G2, Capterra, Gartner-style summaries)
  • Community threads (Reddit shows up a lot, especially for Google)
  • Documentation, research, and news
  • YouTube (transcripts)
  • Wikipedia and other reference pages when the topic is encyclopedic
  • Your own comparison and docs pages, if you already have topical depth

Work that list in two directions.

Owned. If your docs or comparison page is already cited, keep it fresh and extractable. If it is never cited, it is not yet a retrieval candidate. Fix access, the answer capsule, and internal links before you write a sixth blog post.

Earned. If G2 or a publisher roundup is cited and you are absent from that page, the fix is placement, not another thought-leadership essay. Pitch the roundup. Update your review profile. Answer the Reddit question as a human in the category, not as a landing page.

LLM SEO is blunt on this: treat visibility like PR plus SEO, and follow the citations you already see. Generative engine optimization covers the on-page GEO methods. Citations are where those two meet.

YouTube is worth a dedicated pass. The same Ahrefs benchmark found YouTube mentions correlating with AI visibility more strongly than backlinks across 75,000 brands. A transcript that states what you are, who it is for, and a concrete limit is a citable chunk.

Listicles: publish one, get on many

For "best / alternatives / vs" prompts, listicles are the citation magnet.

Publish your own only if you can add criteria a model can repeat: who each option is for, a real price, a disqualifier. A 40-tool dump with your logo first is easy to skip.

Get on lists you do not own. That is the compounding move. Independent roundups, newsletters, and category pages on review sites. When several third-party lists agree you belong in the category, recommendation prompts start naming you even when they cite someone else.

Match the language those lists already use. If every roundup says "AI search visibility tracker," do not invent "answer-engine intelligence platform" on your homepage. Co-occurrence is a citation input.

Technical eligibility (do this once, then stop fiddling)

Before you rewrite ten posts:

  • Allow OAI-Searchbot (ChatGPT search). OpenAI's help article is explicit: allow that bot and the published searchbot IPs. GPTBot is training. Different job.
  • Allow Googlebot for AI Overviews. Do not block Google-Extended unless you intend to opt out of Gemini training; know what you are doing.
  • Submit sitemaps to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. ChatGPT search has used Bing-backed retrieval. Bing index health is not optional for ChatGPT citations.
  • Make sure important pages are indexable (no accidental noindex, login walls, or infinite interstitials).
  • Put datePublished / dateModified on articles and keep them honest.

That is eligibility. It is not a ranking system. Skip it and the rest of this article cannot help.

Measure citations on a prompt set

Do not use a single screenshot as proof.

For each prompt and engine, log:

  • Mentioned (Y/N)
  • Cited (Y/N)
  • Cited URL (yours, competitor, aggregator)
  • Whether the citation supports the sentence (OpenAI tells users to click through and check)

Citation rate = answers with a relevant URL ÷ answers scanned.

Split your domain vs third party about you. Both are wins. They imply different next actions.

AI SEO Tracker stores mentions, citations, sources, and missing prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and AI Overviews. Use the sources table as the outreach list. Use missing prompts as the writing list. $49 audit for a scan week. From $79/mo to keep the set running. MCP if an agent should read the same report.

A 10-day citation sprint

Days 1-2. Run 15 commercial prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. Export every cited domain and URL.

Day 3. Fix robots and sitemaps. Confirm OAI-Searchbot and Bing.

Days 4-6. Take the three missing prompts with the highest commercial intent. Rewrite the matching URL with question H2s, answer capsules, and one comparison table. Add visible FAQs.

Days 7-8. Earn or update two third-party mentions on domains that already appear in your citation log.

Days 9-10. Rescan the same 15 prompts. If a new citation appears, note the URL. If nothing moved, you probably rewrote a page the engine was not retrieving. Go back to the source list.

FAQ

Does schema get me cited?

Schema helps machines parse what the page is. The GEO study did not even test schema as a citation lever. Use it. Do not expect a citation from JSON-LD alone.

Are homepages good citation targets?

Rarely for "how / best / vs" prompts. Those answers come from deep pages: comparisons, docs, listicles, and research. Homepages get cited for "what is [brand]?" If that branded prompt fails, fix the homepage entity. For category prompts, fix the deep page.

Should I write 40-60 word answer boxes on every H2?

A short, complete answer up front is the useful part. Counting words is optional. If the first two sentences answer the heading, you are done.

What if the model cites a competitor's roundup that includes me?

That is a mention on their URL, and a citation for them. You got the name-drop. Next, make your own page citable for the same prompt, and get onto a second list you do not own so the citation graph is not a single competitor.

Citations are earned passages plus trusted URLs. Chunk the page, follow the sources the model already uses, and measure citation rate on a frozen prompt set.
